Rural Urban Linkage

The rural issues surrounding the land use impacts on aquatic ecosystems and the stewardship initiatives undertaken by the rural community are often not well understood by the urban component of the St. Lawrence River (Cornwall) Area of Concern (AOC).  An opportunity exists to raise the awareness of the diversity of challenges facing the rural landowner and the stewardship actions that are being undertaken by including the topic of rural best management practices in the local high school curriculum.

The Rural Urban Linkage project has been proposed to develop a hands-on introduction to rural best management practices at an agricultural site for local high school students.  Students will have an initial exposure to tools and techniques utilized to plan and monitor stewardship activities.  Success will be measured with the participation of local agricultural operators, high school and other agencies and abilities to incorporate stewardship principles into secondary school curriculum.
