With fall well on its way, the Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s (RRCA) three Conservation Areas are beginning to burst into bright yellows, reds, and oranges – offering hikers, birdwatchers, photographers, geocachers, and all who appreciate nature with a chance to step into spectacularly colourful scenes this season.
“Over 100,000 visitors typically make their way to Cooper Marsh, Charlottenburgh Park, and Gray’s Creek throughout the year,” says Claudia Munafo, RRCA’s Public Information Coordinator. “Fall is an especially picturesque time to plan a visit.”
Located along County Road 2 in South Glengarry, the RRCA’s Conservation Areas include over 20 kilometres of nature trails open year-round at no cost. Each Area has something special to offer: Cooper Marsh is a great spot to observe migratory birds; Charlottenburgh Park features a variety of forests and wetlands; and Gray’s Creek has a picnic area surrounded by trees as well as a self-guided arboretum tour showcasing dozens of native tree and shrub species.
“For those interested in overnight stays, camping at Charlottenburgh Park’s campground is still possible until the season closes after the Thanksgiving long weekend,” says Munafo.
RRCA’s three Conservations Areas make up part of over 2,000 acres of environmentally significant land conserved by the authority to provide recreation and eco-tourism opportunities, strengthen local tree cover, protect sensitive habitat, mitigate the effects of drought and flooding, and enhance the general health and resilience of local watersheds. Landowners in the RRCA’s jurisdiction can consider donating their land as their natural heritage legacy. The RRCA is a qualified recipient under Canada’s Ecological Gifts Program and may issue charitable receipts for donations.
“We are also grateful to all those who donate to our Conservation Areas to help preserve and enhance habitat for the benefit of our shared environment and future generations,” adds Munafo. “Those interested in leaving a monetary donation can easily do so online through CanadaHelps at rrca.on.ca/Donate.”
